National Coming Out Day!

National Coming Out Day is an annual awareness day observed on Oct. 11th to support lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer people "coming out of the closet." First celebrating in the U.S. in 1988, National Coming Out Day is often viewed as a time to celebrate individuals' embrace on their true identities and their bravery in doing so, despite the persecution, rejection and other challenges that people who come out can face.

On Oct. 11, the LGBTQ+ Employee Alliance, in partnership with the UNMC Pride Alliance, will have an educational booth for National Coming Out Day at three different locations. Faculty, staff, students and patients will have a chance to win prizes by answering trivia questions.

• Nebraska Medicine University Tower, 3rd Floor: 9 to 10:30 a.m.

• Michael F. Sorrell Center, 2nd Floor: 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

• Bellevue Medical Center: 1 to 2 p.m.

The groups also will display a poster board showing encouraging thoughts from LGBTQ+ individuals and allies around campus. Please take a moment and share what words come to mind when you think of coming out, ie: hope.

The UNMC & Nebraska Medicine LGBTQ+ Employee Alliance and the UNMC Student Pride Alliance promote an accepting and diverse culture across the enterprise by facilitating social and educational activities to promote the well-being of LGBTQ+ faculty, students, staff and allies.
