Target Audience:

This accredited continuing education activity is designed for Behavioral Health providers to include psychologists, advanced practice nurses, nurses, licensed mental health therapists, and social workers.

Educational Objectives:

At the conclusion of this live activity, the participants should be better able to:

Identify common typology individuals in the criminal justice system present with.
Examine the common beginning state of the individual typology, the reward offered by the substance use in each typology, the evidence-based treatment modality for each typology, and common relapse concerns of each typology.
Discuss treatment layering to address the intersection of various typologies and the team members needed for effective treatment.
Explore how to ethically treat individuals with complex needs.
Identify individual education and networking growth plans to grow their capacity to treat individuals with complex needs.

Tom Maxson has been providing outpatient therapy services since 1999 in the Kearney area. He holds licenses as an independent mental health practitioner, alcohol and drug counselor, and psychological assistant.

Tom is also credentialed as a Substance Abuse Professional (SAP). The SAP allows Tom to provide substance use evaluation for individuals under the regulation of the Department of Transportation (DOT).

Tom provides individual and family therapy as well as substance abuse (chemical dependency) evaluations, mental health, and co-occurring evaluations. Tom’s specialty areas include evaluations, treating co-occurring (mental health and substance use) disorders, personality disorders, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, and working with individuals that have struggled with previous treatment episodes or providers. Tom is also trained in the use of EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing).

Accredited Continuing Education:

In support of improving patient care, University of Nebraska Medical Center is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.

The University of Nebraska Medical Center designates this activity for 1.0 ANCC contact hour.  Nurses should only claim credit for the actual time spent participating in the activity.

As a Jointly Accredited Organization, University of Nebraska Medical Center is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved under this program. Regulatory boards are the final authority on courses accepted for continuing education credit. Social workers participating in this activity receive 1.0 ethics continuing education credit.

Social Work Level of Content: Intermediate

1.0 Continuing Education (CE) credits for psychologists are provided through the co-sponsorship of the American Psychological Association (APA) Office of Continuing Education in Psychology (CEP). The APA CEP Office maintains responsibility for the content of the programs.

This activity meets the criteria of an approved continuing education program for Licensed Drug and Alcohol Counselors (LADC). This activity is designated for 1.0 credit hour.
