A Training Program to Enhance Multicultural Public Speaking Skills

Purpose: This training program is designed to improve the oral communication skills of Post-Doctorates for public speaking engagements. The program teaches the essential elements of effective public speaking and includes adaptations for multi-cultural situations. Classroom techniques include brief lectures, group discussions, demonstrations, critique of sample speeches, and video recording of participant speeches.

Objectives: At the end of the training program, participants will be able to demonstrate improvement in public speaking skills, specifically:

• Knowledge of the basic principles of public speaking in a Western culture
• The steps in the speechmaking process, including research, preparation, and practice
• How to adapt speech styles to the expectations of a Euro-American audience
• How to develop and deliver a professional presentation
• The effective use of visual aids to support spoken language
• Ways to reduce or eliminate speech anxiety
• How to handle audience questions, during or after the speech.

Schedule: The program is divided into four sessions, three-hours each, presented each week. Between each session participants are expected to view video recordings and complete homework assignments for the next class. An agenda will be available before the course begins.

Course Facilitator: The seminars will be facilitated by Ms. Peg Peterson, a Public Speaking instructor at the University of Nebraska-Omaha. Ms. Peterson is certified in teaching English as a Second Language and provides assistance with pronunciation and comprehensibility issues. For the past six years she has been coaching international professionals and students on public speaking in English in multi-cultural environments.

Enrollment: The seminar is open to all Post Doctorates at the University Of Nebraska Medical Center. Both native and nonnative English speakers are strongly encouraged to participate. . The seminar will be offered on the following dates and times in DRC 1 1005. You must be available to attend each session:
Session One: Thursday May 7th 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm
Session Two: Thursday May 14th 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm
Session Three: Thursday May 21st 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm
Session Four: Thursday May 28th 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm
